Connected to a toll free services like Skype have been using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) – namely, your computer and a broadband Internet line to make long distance phone calls. Basically, what you pay before you were tested. But the biggest problem was with this service, you must be connected to a computer to make the call, and the right for the duration of the call. Nature as “fixed” – it can move, but could not leave. Thus, VoIP, despite its usefulness, is not acceptable. The formation of companies such as Netgear, UTStarcom, ZyXEL and Linksys has decided to do something – they have built WiFi phones. The phones could WiFi, VoIP go mobile. So, no computer needed more, and you might be around (or move away), then you speak, and “online”. WiFi phones are like phones. But instead of using regular carriers such as Cingular and Nextel, they use the Internet Wi-Fi friendly and open protocols such as SIP, to make your calls. Unlike a regular phone transmits voice as analog (as is, without conversion), WiFi phones convert your voice into a digital format and stores them in packets of binary data in a wireless receiver. The receiver then transmits information on the Internet for the call processor. Throughout the process, IP addresses are used to open up the phone to connect and terminate the call. These IP addresses are used as directional maps of your call – as if you were on the Internet and enter a Web address to access a website. The concept of WiFi phones (and related technologies) is still relatively new. The preference now to use wireless laptops and smartphones, to go to a local “hotspot” – perhaps in a Starbucks or a city center – and surf the Internet wirelessly. With a similar system to make calls at lower than market rates (also free) to do in a city of wide area, is still at a nascent stage. But the fact remains that WiFi technology has a simple and effective, efficient and profitable. It is also absolutely brilliant. Why? Because it has strong roots in digital convergence – the idea of combining many as one of the functions, protocols, services and standards that baffle us, and provides a centralized solution to simplify the technology itself Similarly, the need for multitasking world today reflects. And as this technology grows, and on-the-sink, it’s only a matter of time before Wi-Fi is the de facto choice, and the heart of mobile communication.
